Folly Beach (SC) One of America’s Top Restored Beaches
on May 21st, 2007 at 6:47 amThe American Shore & Beach Preservation Assoc named Folly Beach, South Carolina as one of America’s Top Restored Beaches. East Beach received the award following successful efforts by local, state & national authorities to reverse the effects of erosion on its shoreline.
Who receives this type of award? The top restored beaches were decided on based on the following 3 criteria:
-the short & longterm success of the nourishment project
-the economic & ecological benefits the beach brings to its community
-the challenges each community overcame during the course of the project
In addition to Folly Beach, the 2007 winners included: Chaland Headland Restoration Project, La.; Collier County Beaches, Florida.; Perdido Pass, Alabama.; West Hampton Dunes, Long Island, New York.; Surfside-Sunset Beach, and Orange County, California.
What exactly is beach nourishment? “It is the process of placing sufficient quantities of beach quality sand on eroding beaches to combat erosion. It began in the United States over 40 years ago in coastal communities on the East, West and Gulf Coasts. America now has over 370 nourished beaches, including Miami Beach; Coney Island, N.Y.; Waikiki and Venice Beach, California. Studies have shown that each dollar spent on beach nourishment generates an additional four to five in taxpayer benefits.”
