According to Tennis Magazine, the most popular tennis magazine (600,000 circulation), it rated Charleston as one of the best six places for tennis players to retire in the United States. The magazine came up with the ratings by looking at various items including climate, cultural opportunities, real estate options, number of courts…

In their article, they wrote:

“Few small cities in America capture the imagination quite like Charleston. Southern charm. Elegant homes. Historic sites. And, of course, its location, at a confl uence of rivers and inlets, tidal creeks and marshes—the perfect setting for a lazy life among moss-covered oaks and skittering shorebirds. For tennis players, it probably helps that two of TENNIS’ Top 10 resorts are just across the water—Kiawah Island (28 courts) and Wild Dunes (18 courts). These two overshadow lots of other promising real estate—waterfront, oceanfront, plantation, or marsh-side. If you don’t insist on being within earshot of the Atlantic breakers, you’ll fi nd relatively low costs (from, say, $250,000 and up) at inland locations that still offer miles of waterfront property, thanks to myriad inlets and creeks. Take a look at places like Dunes West (9 courts) and Daniel Island. The latter is the home of the 17-court center that hosts the annual Family Circle Cup.”
