Surf’s Up at Folly Beach

Ever wondered what the surf conditions were at Folly Beach before you left home? Look no further. The Folly Waves Surf Cam is now up and running, giving you live image updates of the Washout, the best surf-spot in Charleston. Already on the go? There’s a scaled down version of the cam that is easily viewable from a mobile device, like a Blackberry or iPhone.
From 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. every hour at 50 minutes after the hour, the cam updates an image complete with data. Wave height, water temps and ocean weather are listed, along with a high-resolution snapshot of the coast at that time. Though the data is accurate to the hour, the site creators have plans to make the camera streaming live in the near future.
There are a few other cams that offer similar services in the area, but we like this new Folly Waves cam because you don’t need any extra plug-ins in your browser, like Quicktime or Flash, to view the images. Also, the site can handle more viewers, making the content reliable and fast.
The folks at FollyWaves.com think the best waves visit the Washout in the fall and winter. Not only will the summer crowds have left by then, but also the 70-degree water has consistent waves thanks to the late-summer tropical storms and hurricanes.
“With the right winds and a storm offshore, Folly Beach can produce some excellent surf…” says FollyWaves.com.
